Having been with us for four months, the wonderful Poppy Richards gives the inside scoop to life as a consumer PR intern at M&C Saatchi PR…
M&C Saatchi PR is the Rolls Royce of internships. As clichés go, there’s no better way to immerse yourself in consumer PR than at M&C. The first week started with a little taster of each account from seeding influencers for Foot Locker to e-shots for Currys PC World. Let’s just say no task is too small, because in PR as we all know detail is key.
Once I was given allocated accounts the fun really began. A major highlight was the Nude by Nature Flawless Collection Launch at Dalloway Terrace. The build up to an event is all hands-on deck – but seeing an event go from mood board, to planning, to approval, to the day of is incredibly satisfying. Firstly, this being my first major project as part of the Nude by Nature team the pressure was on – weekly team catch ups and trackers were my life prior to The Big Day (yes, I am comparing this to organising a wedding). Everything was planned to a T – from flower arrangements, couriers and beverages. When it came to media outreach, this was the toughest challenge – getting confirmed attendees is like gold dust in PR. However, having fifteen top tier media attend and all give glowing reviews of the product is what is all boils down to.
Going from in-house to agency was a jump (slight understatement) – moving across from part of a small niche design team to M&C was a real breath of fresh air; even if at first was a little tricky to adjust to the altitude. All their accounts have allowed me to tap into different consumer markets; even working with various parts of the M&C team from CREATE to corporate – we truly are blended. Agency work really is fantastic a step up.
A favourite task of mine has been seeding. Foot Locker send samples to the office for us to distribute to influencers or ‘sneaker heads’, as they are infamously dubbed, that the team here have identified and been working collaboratively with. What people don’t realise is that there’s so much more to seeding than simply mailing out a pair of sneaks. There’s styling, agreed content, timings, and couriering. When discussing this with other members of the Foot Locker team we sound like we are speaking a foreign language – but seeding a pair of Nike VaperMax Fly Knits to blvckmvnivc is a big deal.
To sum up my time so far at M&C, as Drake would say: started from the bottom now we’re here.
